HIGHLANDS, NJ — In June of 2020, a woman was sexually assaulted at Sandy Hook by a man she was on a first date with, said acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey. While the sex assault took place on June 5, 2020, a Monmouth County jury returned guilty verdicts this week against the Hudson County man accused of the crime, Kawami R. Junor, 28, of Bayonne.\ On that date, a Friday, a good Samaritan flagged down a member of the National Park Service near Lot C and said there was an injured adult woman in the area. The woman, who had sustained an injury to her foot when her attacker ran her over, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. An investigation by the Special Victims Unit with the Monmouth County Prosecutor determined that the woman and Junor had met the day before in Jersey City and had agreed to go on a first date to the scenic beaches and dunes of Sandy Hook. The two spent time on the beach but police say after that Junor guided her to the backseat of his car, forcibly removed her clothing, exposed himself, and sexually assaulted her — all while she loudly and repeatedly refused consent. The woman fought back physically, and when she opened the car door to leave, Junor pushed her out onto the pavement and left the scene in his BMW, running over her foot on the way out of the parking lot. "I am personally in awe of the courage it took for this victim to step onto the witness stand and describe what happened to her in vivid detail," Acting Prosecutor Linskey said. "This verdict is a tribute to her bravery, and delivers the justice she deserves." Middletown Police and Sandy Hook rangers with the National Park Service participated in this investigation and prosecution. Junor was convicted on all charges, including second-degree sex assault, third-degree criminal restraint and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. The trial lasted a week and the jury deliberated for several hours before returning the guilty verdicts. Junor was also found guilty of assault by auto, a disorderly persons offense. He is facing up to 20 years in state prison; he will be sentenced May 6. Get great local news. Sign up for Patch: https://patch.com/subscribe Contact this Patch reporter: [email protected]
