Rutgers Students, Others Robbed In New Brunswick, Police Say

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Rutgers campus police are investigating three separate gunpoint or knife-point robberies, all of which happened after midnight Wednesday night on New Brunswick city streets. The first robbery happened at 1:04 a.m. on Hartwell Street in the area of Hamilton Street. The victims, who are affiliated with Rutgers University, said they were approached by four men who brandished a single handgun and stole unspecified items from them. The suspects fled the area in a silver SUV. The victims did not sustain any injuries. Then at 1:21 a.m. on Delafield Street in the area of Courtland Street, another Rutgers student said he was approached by three men who brandished a handgun, punched him in the face and unsuccessfully tried to steal from him. They drove off in an older model dark gray minivan. And then at 1:29 a.m. on Prospect Street in the area of Somerset Street, the victim, who is not affiliated with Rutgers University, said he was approached by two men who brandished a knife and removed several items of value. The men fled on foot. A description of the perpetrators is limited at this time. The New Brunswick Police Department asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in these areas at the time, contact the NBPD's Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217. Police patrols have been increased in the area. Rutgers Police have long warned students to avoid walking around the campus and city of New Brunswick in the late-night hours. Get great local news.
