Bird E-Scooter Pilot Program Lands In Indio, City Announces

INDIO, CA —Shared electronic scooters will be coming to the city of Indio, it was announced Thursday. During Wednesday night's City Council meeting, Indio officials approved a deal with Bird, an electric transportation company, for a one-year pilot program with the e-scooters, according to city spokesperson Brooke Beare. The program will allow for sharable e-scooters to be spread around the city for citizens to use via Bird's electronic app. "We are excited to welcome Bird to the city of Indio," said Indio Mayor Waymond Fermon. "Whether going to the Farmers Market downtown, seeing some of the city's new sculptures, commuting to work or school, residents and visitors now have another fun, eco-friendly way to get around." The program comes at no cost to the city and is scheduled to end on March 2, 2023. The city can end the agreement with a notice of 30 days. The e-scooters are only allowed on streets, bike lanes and bike paths. Although the e-scooters are free to the city, they are not free to use by citizens and pricing will vary based on distance traveled.
