Press release from District 30: March 3, 2022 After holding a fundraiser like the Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run for over 20 years at District 30 schools, all involved know that it is no small feat. Although many small (and large feet) have contributed to the Lew Blond Run's long time success, it takes teamwork and major collaboration, and love. This year's event will take place at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21 at Wescott School, 1820 Western Avenue, Northbrook. Lew Blond Run registration is underway at lewblondrun.org. The district's incentive for this event began when beloved applied technology teacher Lew Blond was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease, in the late 1990's. Everyone rallied around him and his family, providing support on all levels. In 2000, the first Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run was initiated by District 30 administrators, faculty, and community volunteers to raise funds to support research for ALS, provide scholarships for high school students at District 225, and to fund special school projects, in Mr. Blond's memory. Over the years, the race has welcomed thousands of participants and volunteers, and it has become a very successful fundraiser and community event. Generous sponsors have also showed loyalty and care by their continuous support. In 2016, the Les Turner ALS Foundation even honored District 30's Lew Blond Run with the annual volunteer of the year award, citing that "District 30 is the longest third party organization to host a fundraiser to benefit the Les Turner ALS Foundation, which helps fund research for ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease." As the Lew Blond Executive Committee prepares for this year's Lew Blond Run, it is also offering a 50-yard dash (The Little Lew) for participants six years-old and younger. There will also be a silent auction. Volunteers and participants are welcome. While typically hosted at Maple School, local road construction has moved this year's race to Wescott.
