DEERFIELD, IL — With graduation just months away, local seniors are making the most of their final days of school. For Deerfield High School senior Varun Goel, it also means some accomplishments in the areas of academics and leadership. Coca-Cola Scholar: Goel was selected as a 2022 Regional Finalist for the Coca-Cola Scholar Foundation, one of 251 from a total applicant pool of over 68,000 students after a subsequent semifinalist group of nearly 1600 students. Students are recognized based on their academics, ability to lead and serve, and commitment to making a significant impact in schools and communities. Ultimately, 150 regional finalists will be awarded $20,000 in merit scholarships. U.S. Presidential Scholar: He is selected as a 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate by the U.S. Department of Education. Candidacy is based on performance on the ACT Assessment or the College Board SAT, or nomination by Chief State School Officer or one of partner recognition organizations. In the next round, selected candidates are evaluated based on their academic achievement, leadership, and service activities to become a Semifinalist, with the results due in April.
