WORCESTER, MA — The friends of a Worcester man killed in a recent car collision are raising money to help pay for his funeral costs. Oscar Niyibasumba, 21, died on Feb. 22. Niyibasumba emigrated to Worcester and was a graduate of the African Community Education program, which helps migrants and refugees achieve stability in the U.S. "He is a son, a brother, an uncle and a friend to many," African Community Education worker Tereza Ngendahoruri said in a GoFundMe fundraiser. "He and his family have been living in Worcester over a decade now. He was just 21 years old looking forward to celebrating his 22nd birthday in April when the accident took his life." The $10,000 fundraiser had raised just under $2,500 as of Thursday afternoon. ACE began in Worcester in 2006 in response to the refugee crisis in Liberia following the ascent of former president Charles Taylor in the 1990s. There are about 20,000 people living in the Worcester who are from African countries, according to the organization. GoFundMe is a Patch promotional partner
