Description
"In 2021, the U.S. imported an average of 209,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 500,000 bpd of other petroleum products from Russia. Although Russian crude accounts for only three percent of U.S. crude oil imports and about one percent of total crude oil processed by U.S. refineries—Russian crude oil imports are important to refineries on the West Coast and Gulf Coast." https://www.afpm.org/newsroom/blog/oil-and-petroleum-imports-russia-explained
On top of the western oil companies have pulled out of russia and with tough sanctions in place the russian owned oil companies Gazprom and Rosneft will probably shut down anyway.
Escalating this situation too fast will put Paranoid Putin in a corner. Anything close to his border is a personal threat. Once he gets in a corner he could launch nukes and start WW3. He blames everything like the Arab Springs (Middle East uprisings for democracy) to any kind of threat to dictatorships as a threat. He grew up as a bully and his past ties to counter intelligence make him very volatile.
