Join us for a interdisciplinary writing workshop led by poet journalist Jireh Deng.
Join VoiceWaves for an interdisciplinary writing workshop led by poet journalist Jireh Deng. This is for anyone looking to make their poetry more journalistic or to make their journalism more poetic. Or maybe you are new to poetry and journalism and want to learn observation and dreaming through words. We will be drawing on Safia Elhillo's generative writing workshop structure and consume works by Jericho Brown, Denise Levertov, Noor Hindi, Franny Choi and more. All you need to bring is yourself and some materials to write with.
Jireh Deng 鄧以樂 (she/they) is a Taiwanese-Hong Konger American born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. Their creative work appears with the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, The Rumpus, Literary Hub, Human Rights Campaign, and more. In summer 2021 they interned at the Los Angeles Times and is currently an intern at NPR. You can follow their work on Instagram and Twitter at @jireh_deng.
VoiceWaves is a Long Beach youth-led journalism and media-training project. The youth, ages 15–25, are learning to report, write, and create digital journalism content. Their stories raise awareness about community health issues and activate change in local neighborhoods.
