Learn about the role grains and malts play in beer, and taste the results, with Logan McLean of Drekker Brewing.
In the fast paced world of craft beer today, so much attention is focused on the latest experimental hops, fruit/spice/candy flavorings, or the addition of ingredients from lactose to oat milk that the fundamentals are often ignored. At its core, beer is composed of grain, water, yeast, and hops. Of all these ingredients, grains, usually but not always in the form of barley malt, form the heart and soul of the beer.
In this class, Logan McLean, a brewer with Drekker, is going to explain how different grains and malts result in different characteristics in beer. Expect to sample a wide range of beers featuring malts of all sorts, from simple and classic pale malts to the darker varieties that yield rich dark beers and everything in between. Logan will bring forth his brewing expertise so you can understand how brewers think about malts and learn to appreciate this less-heralded but critically important brewing ingredient.
