OAK CREEK, WI — The City of Oak Creek is planning on creating a mosaic at the Civic Center out of artwork by Oak Creek residents. The project comes as part of a new public art initiative. The Art OC Community Canvasses project and contest was launched at the beginning of March, and it starts with blank canvasses being handed out to residents at City Hall and the Library. Everyone who picks up one of the canvasses is being asked by the city to create an original work of art with it, in any medium, drawing on inspiration from Oak Creek. The completed works have to be returned by May 31 so they can be combined with others to create the community mosaic, according to the city's website. The inspiration for the works of art should come from Oak Creek's past or the present, or even what you envision for the future, the city of Oak Creek website says. "This can be anything from your favorite park, school, trail, neighborhood business, location, or even your own backyard," the city's website said. "We want to see what Oak Creek means to you." The city has already started handing out the 10" by 10" canvasses and matt boards. They can be picked up at service counters at Oak Creek City Hall and the Oak Creek Public Library, 8040 South 6th Street, during regular business hours. The project is for artists of all ages and abilities, according to the city's website. Each entry will be eligible for prizes, regardless of the entry type. A committee of City of Oak Creek employees will judge each work on originality, creativity, quality and relevance to the project's topic. Two prizes for 1st and 2nd place will be awarded as part of the contest. Either place may have their art featured on a utility box, bus shelter or another public place within the city. 1st place will also receive $200, and 2nd place will receive $100, according to the city's website. All other entries will be put into a random drawing for prizes such as gift cards valuing $20. Winners will be announced in June on the city's website and Facebook page. More information on the project can be found on the City of Oak Creek website.
