DARIEN, IL — As of Sunday, just under 1 percent of Darien's population has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to government figures. The Darien caseload numbers 216, or a 9 percent increase from the week before. The number of deaths from the coronavirus remains at six in Darien, according to the DuPage County Health Department. It is followed by West Chicago, with 953 cases, or 35.5 per thousand. Despite the high caseloads, both towns have seen relatively few deaths — 9 in Addison and 12 in West Chicago. Darien's rate of increase of 9 percent was higher than DuPage County as a whole, which saw its caseload rise by about 5 percent in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.7 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 10 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 10.7 in Western Springs, 10.9 in La Grange Park, 12.5 in Elmhurst, 12.8 in Clarendon Hills, 14 in DuPage County, 15.5 in Hinsdale, 17.8 in Burr Ridge, 18.6 in suburban Cook County and 21.9 in La Grange. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 206,081, up 6 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,744 state residents. Nationally, 5.3 million people have caught the virus, up 7 percent from the week before. A total of 168,696 people have died from the virus in the United States.
