DARIEN, IL — For the second week in a row, Darien saw a 9 percent increase in the number of coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to statistics from the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, cases rose by 31 in the previous week, to 385. The number of those who are considered recovered is unavailable. The number of local deaths from the coronavirus was eight as of Sunday, the same as it has been for weeks, according to the health department. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.9 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 17.8 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 17.7 in La Grange Park, 20.3 in Western Springs, 22.4 in DuPage County, 22.6 in Clarendon Hills, 23.5 in Elmhurst, 24.7 in Hinsdale, 27.4 in suburban Cook County, 27.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands) and 28.6 in Burr Ridge. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 344,048, up 8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 9,214 state residents. Nationally, 8.1 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before.
