DARIEN, IL — Darien experienced a 13 percent rise last week in the total number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That's lower than the two previous weeks' increases — 17 percent and 18 percent. As of Sunday, Darien had seen 857 virus cases, up 96 from a week before. The number of local deaths from the coronavirus since the pandemic's beginning remained at nine over the last week, according to the health department. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 39.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 35.4 in La Grange Park, 41.2 in Western Springs, 41.7 in Hinsdale, 43.9 in Clarendon Hills, 46.9 in Elmhurst, 47.1 in DuPage County, 50.8 in Burr Ridge, 51.5 in suburban Cook County and 55.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 720,114, up 9.7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 12,193 state residents. Nationally, 13.1 million people have caught the virus, up 9.5 percent from the week before. A total of 265,166 people have died from the virus in the United States.
