DARIEN, IL — If you think the media are always alarmist about the coronavirus, you may want to keep this story in mind as contrary to your theory. The last week was good news on the pandemic front in Darien: The city saw an increase of 4.1 percent in coronavirus cases in the last week. That's the lowest percentage increase since September. In terms of the raw number of cases, Darien also fared well: As of Sunday, the city has seen 1,095 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. That's an increase of 43 more than the week before. That's better than each of the previous four weeks when increases ranged from 81 to 108. The number of local deaths from the coronavirus stayed the same from the previous week, totaling 14. That works out to less than a thousandth of a percent of Darien's population. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. Here's a look at the number of accumulated cases since the beginning of the crisis: DateDarienDuPageApril 115379April 12401,165April 19471,693April 26602,447May 3803,663May 10834,615May 17945,892May 241077,063May 311137,717June 71168,120June 141258,434June 211318,684June 281408,944July 51429,315July 121479,721July 1915510,185July 2617010,880Aug. 218411,458Aug. 919812,229Aug. 1621612,880Aug. 2322913,765Aug. 3025214,459Sept. 626415,296Sept. 1328015,997Sept. 2029816,559Sept. 2731717,435Oct. 432518,174Oct. 1135419,269Oct. 1838520,715Oct. 2541322,339Nov. 144724,042Nov. 852828,230Nov. 1565333,336Nov. 2276138,418Nov. 2985743,445Dec. 695748,257Dec. 131,05252,966Dec. 201,09555,532 Darien's rate of increase of 4.1 percent was less than DuPage County's 4.8 hike in the last week. The figure compares to 46.8 in La Grange Park, 52.7 in Hinsdale, 53 in Western Springs, 58.4 in Clarendon Hills, 59.8 in Elmhurst, 60.2 in DuPage County, 65.4 in Burr Ridge, 65.8 in suburban Cook County and 73 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 900,370, up 5.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 15,202 state residents. Nationally, 17.6 million people have caught the virus, up 10 percent from the week before. A total of 315,260 people have died from the virus in the United States.
