Press release from San Diego Community College District: February 28, 2022 Throughout March, the San Diego Community College District, including San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, and Continuing Education colleges will celebrate Women's History Month with numerous events ranging from the annual Gracia Molina de Pick Feminist Lecture Series, a dance showcase, panel discussions, and a stand-up comedy show. All events are free and open to the public. Among them are the following:  "World Cultures Collection Exhibition featuring African, African American and Mexican Textiles"The San Diego Mesa College Foundation World Cultures Collection Glass Gallery exhibition will feature textiles from Africa, a quilt by African American Quilter Arbie Williams, and Mexican dresses thanks to the generous donation from the Gracia Molina de Pick and Chicano Studies Endowment.Location: Mesa College Glass Gallery, LRC 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m."Laugh and Learn at Lunch with Nina G"The District Committee for Community, Inclusion, and Diversity is pleased to host comedian, speaker and author Nina G. to kick off Disability Awareness Month and Women's History Month.Welcome to the world of Nina G: professional speaker, stand-up comedian, author, and a person who stutters. Her humor is one that informs and entertains. Nina challenges the status quo of how people who stutter are perceived onstage and off. Additionally, she substitutes the negative emotions of shame, denial and isolation with positive ones of pride, acceptance and community. And, despite learning disabilities, she has a doctorate and is now working with students with disabilities to access their education. She gives hope to those who stutter, and insight to those who don't.Nina will entertain, educate and engage us in a conversation on disability culture and creating access and empowerment. Students are welcome.Register on Zoom here.  3 p.m."Women Leaders in Caring Professions" Join the Sociology department for a panel featuring women leaders from Voices for Children, Mesa's EOPS and STAR TRIO program, and other local organizations and agencies. Panelists will talk about their experiences as women working in social services and what students can expect as they pursue careers in caring professions like social work, child welfare advocacy and nursing. Building Community Through Culture with Professor Alessandra Moctezuma, Gallery Director and Chicana/o Studies"The annual Gracia Molina de Pick Feminist Lecture Series honors the founder of the San Diego Mesa College Chicana/o Studies department and recognizes her life-long commitment to education, feminism, and dedication to the mission of the community college. For the past 11 years, this lecture series has successfully attracted a wide-range of campus and community members from the regional to San Diego Mesa College to reflect on the importance of Chicana/o Studies, Women's Rights, Civil Rights, Community Service and Education.Register on Zoom here.  2 to 3 p.m."Embracing Disability: Beyond Accommodation with Judy Heumann"Disability is more than a conversation about accommodation in higher education, it should also recognize disability as social identity that is rich and layered and impacts, enhances, and frames a person's life.
