Morning, Sacramento! Let's get this Wednesday started off right. Here's everything you need to know today in Sacramento. First, today's weather: Intervals of clouds and sun. High: 76 Low: 45. Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today: A man shot and killed his three daughters, their chaperone and then himself Monday during a supervised visit with the girls at a Sacramento church, authorities said. The shooting started around 5 p.m. Monday at The Church In Sacramento in the city's Arden-Arcade neighborhood. The girls were 9, 10 and 13 years old, authorities said. Their mother had a restraining order against the 39-year-old father, Sheriff Scott Jones said. The mother lives out of town. A memorial was set up outside the church Tuesday morning to collect donations, The Sacramento Bee reported. According to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, the three girls were 10-year-old Samantha Mora Gutierrez, 9-year-old Samarah Mora Gutierrez and 13-year-old Samia Mora Gutierrez. Fifty-nine-year-old Nathaniel Kong was also killed. The gunman was identified as 39-year-old David Mora Rojas. (Sacramento Patch & KCRA3)Roads were closed in downtown Sacramento on Tuesday after an off-duty sheriff's deputy was shot at in the area, according to authorities. The deputy was walking in plain clothes on their way to work at the Sacramento County Jail when they were shot at from a passing vehicle, officials said. The deputy was not hurt in the shooting. Authorities said Fifth and Sixth streets at I Street were closed during the investigation. (KCRA3)A space designated for people experiencing homelessness has been successful in sheltering them and keeping them safe, according to Sacramento officials. The Miller Park Safe Ground, a 60-tent designated area built to hold 110 people, opened in early February. "We're already seeing some of those outcomes of getting people from unsanctioned areas, unsafe areas outdoors, bringing them in and giving them dignity and respect they need," Nick Golling, program manager of homeless services for the City of Sacramento's Department of Community Response, said. So far, six people from Miller Park transitioned into elevated indoor housing. Some of them have made it into permanent housing programs, which the city says is the goal. (KCRA3) Parents and school staff met with Sacramento city officials to improve traffic safety around a local elementary school. This comes after a parent was hit by a car and killed outside the school earlier this year. Parents at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School are calling for change and trying to make streets safer around the campus. Since the crash, new rumble strips have been installed, larger school zone signs and stop lights have been added, and police have conducted undercover crosswalk stings. Last year, Sacramento had 53 fatal vehicle collisions on city streets — that's the highest number in more than 30 years. (Good Day Sacramento) The vice presidents of California's largest state employee union SEIU, Local 1000, issued a letter to union staff on Sunday saying they had suspended President Richard Louis Brown because he posed an "immediate threat" to the union's welfare due to mismanagement and improper spending. His access to union headquarters was later revoked, union spokesperson Brian Nash said. SEIU, the parent union, supported the vice presidents' move. In a statement, the union said it hoped Brown's suspension would "stabilize the local and safeguard the interests of the members while related charges and legal matters are fully and fairly adjudicated." Brown said Monday he rejected the allegations and was still the union's rightful president. He called the movement against him a coup and said he didn't recognize the suspension. He said he had already suspended the vice presidents as of Friday.
