Concerned Shop Owner Starts Pro-Ukraine Wall In Hoboken

HOBOKEN, NJ — Sharon Florio, who has run a vintage goods shop in Hoboken for 35 years, says she says she was so "disturbed" by the recent Russian invasion — and the fact that "people are walking around like nothing's happening" — that she wanted to raise awareness. This week, she placed a sign with two pieces of chalk outside her small shop, which is off the beaten path on a side street, Sixth Street. "I'm three times older than most of my customers," Florio said Tuesday. "Lots of young people, especially in Hoboken, are reserved about sharing their opinion." Florio added, "I felt disturbed. More should be done to help. How can anyone not be inspired by the Ukranian people's bravery?" She said that in mile-square Hoboken, a popular city with young people and commuters, she had thought "Most people are walking around like nothing's happening," so she gave them a place to vent. And vent they did. As of Tuesday morning, the brick wall next to her shop was covered in sentiments. "I think it's wonderful," she said. "I love seeing parents explain it to their children. It brings an awareness that not everyone's as comfortable as we are right now." She said people should donate to support the Ukraine, too. Around Hudson County, people are doing just that. The city of Jersey City Tweeted on Monday, "Please help #UkrainianJerseyCity gather supplies. Use this link below to donate goods directly. Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla Tweeted Monday,"Hoboken City Hall is now featuring the colors of Ukraine flag, blue and yellow, at night. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people who are heroically fighting for freedom. Your struggle is our struggle and we stand tall with you."
