Alex Bores Jumps Into UES Assembly Race As Field Grows

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The race for a rare open State Assembly seat on the Upper East Side got more crowded on Wednesday, as Democratic district leader Alex Bores became the latest candidate to jump in. Bores, 31, announced his candidacy Wednesday in a 90-second video, describing himself as a "lifelong East Sider" with policy interests that include public education, transit, gun violence and affordable housing. "My whole career has been focused on finding innovative solutions to government's problems," said Bores, an engineer who said he would be the Assembly's only Democrat to hold a computer science degree. Bores is the fifth candidate to enter the race for the 73rd District seat held since 2011 by Dan Quart, who is not running for re-election. His rivals are Democratic committee member Adam Roberts, former city commissioner May Malik, humanitarian advocate Kellie Leeson, and Community Board 8 Chair Russell Squire. Ben Kallos, the former City Council member, had told Patch last year that he was considering a run, but there has been little movement on a possible campaign since then, as the June 28 primary draws closer. Kallos declined to comment when reached by Patch on Wednesday. The 73rd District covers Carnegie Hill, Lenox Hill and much of Midtown East and Murray Hill — though its boundaries will shift slightly this year following the statewide redistricting process. In a press release, Bores touted his work during the pandemic, saying he had worked with municipalities in four states to build relief programs that distributed $10 million in aid. He also spearheaded a recent effort to add the Roosevelt Island Tramway to Google Maps. "The common thread among all of these experiences is delivering results, not rhetoric, to hardworking families," Bores said.
