TUCSON, AZ — The local Ukrainian American community, and its friends, are set to protest the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Sunday in Tucson. The rally is set to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday in Jacome Plaza at 101 N. Stone St. in downtown Tucson, according to a news release from City Council Member Steve Kozachik. Singing of the American and Ukrainian national anthems is set to begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by peaceful protesting. The demonstration is aimed at supporting the fight of the Ukrainian people and demanding an end to the Russian invasion and occupation. Kozachik's grandfather was an immigrant from Eastern Europe, he said. "The Ukrainian invasion strikes close to home," Kozachik said. "And yet, it doesn't require a family tie to look at the Russian invasion with disgust and revulsion." The rally's organizers ask that participants do not break the law or do or wear anything vulgar or inappropriate. Rally-goers are asked to wear blue and yellow, the national colors of Ukraine. "I applaud them for the bravery and determination the Ukrainian citizens are showing, and I applaud the Polish people for the open arms with which they're receiving refugees from the war zones," Kozachik said in the news release.
