Typical schedule is Monday to Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm. Our Construction Technicians install, maintain and repair services for our customers. The Construction Technician completes construction tasks for the company’s copper and fiber optic plants while working to meet project deadlines successfully. Essential Position FunctionsReview and analyze construction drawings to determine work to be done, methods and sequence of tasksWork with heavy duty power equipment in the construction and repair of outside plant cable facilities, conduit, and pole linesClimb utility poles and lift equipment weighing up to eighty (80) pounds. (Training will be provided) Use a variety of hand tools and machinery including shovels, picks, and various power tools to complete assignmentsLoad and unload materials, machinery, and tools: distribute to appropriate locations, according to project plansManually locate buried utility linesPlace and maintain cable/fiber within underground conduit systemUse testing equipment to check for gas in manholes and cleans water and debris from manholesPerform preventative maintenance on all assigned company tools, equipment, and motor vehicleMaintain a clean job site: pick up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day to eliminate potential safety hazardsDemonstrate excellent customer service skills in each interaction with internal customers, external customers, and vendorsRespond to customer inquiries about products, work operations, etc. during field contactsAble to work both independently and in conjunction with co-workers to achieve company goals; must have a strong team mentality Must meet specific quality, production, and safety standardsMust work overtime when necessary Will be assigned to work a standby on-call rotation Submit time reporting tasks using laptop computer on a daily basisPerform other duties as assigned Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalentAt least two (2) years of general work experience related to construction preferred (working outside, lifting heavy items)Competence with hand and power tools requiredBasic knowledge of and ability to safely operate construction equipment and tools, including trenchers, backhoes, directional boring machines, vibratory plows, mini excavators, bucket trucks, and other various vehicles.Valid Class “A” CDL is strongly preferred. (If not, required within 90 days of hire date)Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focusAbility to prioritize and complete assignments accurately and in a timely mannerMust be able to demonstrate ability to follow directions, produce quality work, and maintain safe working conditionsOpen to changing priorities and working under tight deadlines; ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communications skillsMust be able to work alone, and within a teamMust be able to read, write and speak fluent English Must fully comply with company’s safety programGeneral ability to operate a laptop computer to record completed tasks and to access documentsMust be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check Physical DemandsThe employee will need to have the ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 12 hours at a time), tolerate work in extreme weather conditions, speak and hear worksite safety instructions, withstand prolonged and repeated: lifting, sitting, standing, squatting, climbing, kneeling, reaching and feeling, crouching, and crawling, reach and utilize both hands and feet in an aerial and underground capacity The employee will need to be able to regularly lift and move up to 80 pounds. Must be able to work in various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, and dry). Preferred QualificationsPrevious construction experience, preferably in the telecommunications industryPreferred knowledge and skills include a) Aerial and underground construction, b) Directional drilling, c) Backhoe / vibratory cable plow / trencher operation, d) FTTP implementation, and e) Cable jetting Typical Working ConditionsOutdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (85%)Outdoors but in an enclosed vehicle or temporary shelter protected from extreme weather conditions (10%)Indoors in a temperature-controlled environment (5%) Exposure to vibration, improperly illuminated or awkward and confining workspaces, and working above ground level where the possibility of falling existsThis is a full-time hourly position, expected to work at least 40 hours per week. This position operates in an outdoor environment and is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. The outside work environment will vary throughout the day including changes in terrain, traffic, urban settings, and/or rural settings. Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels.
