Press release from the City of Beaverton: November 13, 2020 BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Beaverton Severe Weather Shelter will open for the season on Sunday, November 15 in partnership with Just Compassion of East Washington County to provide a warm, safe space for adults experiencing homelessness. This year, in coordination with Washington County, the shelter will be expanding its services and will be one of the three confirmed shelters in Washington County for the winter. The shelter is anticipated to operate for 120 continuous days from opening through March 2021 as a 24-hour, seven days per week shelter. The shelter is located at the Beaverton Community Center at 12350 SW 5th Street with capacity for up to 30 adults (age 18 or older) on an enrollment basis and no longer will be first come first served. Media interviews with shelter representatives and shelter tours will be offered Sunday, November 15 from 12 to 2 p.m. either remotely or with proper distancing. For the safety and comfort of guests and staff, interviews will not be offered outside of these times on opening day, but can be arranged separately as needed. Referral for adults in need of shelter could be enrolled by contacting Community Connect at 503-640-3263 or visiting www.co.washington.or.us/homeless. Families can access the countywide Family Shelter Network by calling 503-640-3263. Shelter guests are provided with three meals each day and access to resources and referral to social services. A shower trailer will be available Thursday through Sunday for guests. The shelter is not currently taking volunteers or donations at this time, but those interested can check the website for future needs. Community members are encouraged to explore giving and donation opportunities in the region and beyond during National Hunger and Homelessness Week happening November 15 through 22. Due to COVID-19, changes have been made to shelter operations to meet state and county health and safety guidelines and ensure a safe environment for people to shelter-in-place. Staff are hired by Just Compassion and guests will be required to wear face coverings. The shelter has consulted with Washington County Public Health on safety practices, and people with COVID-19 symptoms or contact will be referred to a respite hotel to quarantine away from the congregate setting.
