POMONA, CA —A car chase late Tuesday involved a suspected drunk driver who maneuvered Pomona streets with his year-old baby inside a minivan, Pomona police say.
The child's mother alerted authorities that the father, Chino resident Anthony Trejo, was intoxicated and driving her child inside a Honda minivan, the Pomona Police Department reported.
Trejo was spotted driving the minivan in the area of Reservoir Street and County Road. A slow-speed pursuit began, and the motorist pulled over for a short time before fleeing the scene and increasing his speed through city streets.
Police say the driver increased his speed and careened through red lights with a "complete disregard for the public's safety," according to a news release.
Police canceled their active pursuit, reducing the risk to the child and community. Air support followed the minivan to where it ultimately was parked in the 700 block of Washington Avenue. Trejo fled on foot to a nearby street, where police apprehended him.
The child was found, safe and uninjured, inside the vehicle.
Police arrested Trejo on suspicion of felony drunken driving, felony child endangerment, felony hit-and-run with injury, felony pursuit as well as misdemeanors for driving on a suspended license and violation of a restraining order.
