Description

Raised beds are a wonderful way for gardeners to have successful gardens in challenging spaces. Class Description: Gardens come in various shapes and sizes. There are lots of considerations that should be taken into account. How much area do you have in your yard that can be dedicated to a garden? What do you want to grow, what can be maintained by one person? What kind of framing materials do you want to use? For raised bed gardens, the size and shape may also depend on how important it is for the gardener to have easy access to all parts of the garden without compacting the soil by walking on it. This class, taught by Master Gardener Don Sutton, will look at these considerations and a few more. Participants will learn how to: • Decide on raised bed style, size, materials • Plan for vertical gardening, incorporating shade or frost covering • Set up an irrigation system • Prepare the soil • Select appropriate plants and install them • Apply crop rotation methods Speaker: Don Sutton Don is a graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with an undergraduate degree in biology. His gardening experience started early. He was the official weed picker for his great uncle on a two-acre garden in Hullet, Wyoming. Don has worked with schools and churches in the Valley to set up and maintain vegetable gardens. He also works with some gardeners at a community garden in Glendale via Zoom. Additionally, he has been a speaker at the Maricopa Home and Garden shows over the last two years.
