Press release from Hamden Public Library: March 1, 2022 We hope you will join us for a free virtual presentation about Eleanor Roosevelt, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Our host for the evening, Mark Albertson, will discuss the profound impact Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), as First Lady and as an human rights crusader, had on political history throughout the world. President Harry Truman once observed, "Eleanor Roosevelt was not America's First Lady, but the First Lady of the world." Her dedication to the common good yielded many firsts. She was the first presidential spouse to address a presidential convention and to hold a press conference. Using her office, she advocated for civil rights. She was one of the co-authors of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Throughout her life, Eleanor Roosevelt helped the unemployed, fought racial discrimination, and improved the lot of women, showing that a myriad of accomplishments are possible in the face of adversity. Mark Albertson teaches history at Norwalk Community College in Norwalk, Connecticut. He is the historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine in Monroe, Connecticut, and is the historian for the Army Aviation Association of America. This event is free and open to the public.
