WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield commuters were surprised with a small trash can fire at Westfield train station Monday evening.
As many were arriving home at around 5:50 p.m., a trash can next to the station's underpass was fully ablaze. The fire department quickly put out the fire upon arrival, according to Westfield spokesperson Kim Forde.
Forde said a thermal imaging camera was then used by the fire department to check the structure for fire extension, but none was found.
Police Chief Christopher Battiloro said the fire did not interrupt any train traffic.
Westfield Police blocked the underpass on the south side entrance until the fire was completely extinguished, according to Forde.
Battiloro said there was no indication that the fire was intentionally set.
He said all units were clear from the scene by 6:12 p.m.
A photo of the fire can be viewed on Tapinto.
