GILROY, CA — A coronavirus outbreak at a Gilroy nursing home has resulted in 12 deaths and at least 75 infections, KTVU reports. Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center was identified as the site of the outbreak. It is not known when the infections and deaths occurred at the 132-bed facility. "On behalf of our entire community, we join these families in mourning the loss of their loved ones to this insidious virus," center officials said in a statement according to a San Francisco Chronicle report. Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center started accepting coronavirus-infected patients in an isolated COVID-19 recovery unit in August, according to the KTVU report. The center told the television station that 32 patients have since been admitted, cared for and have recovered. The center's COVID-19 recovery unit is believed to have led to the outbreak inside the facility, according to the KTVU report. "It's insane," said Tammy Abreu-Butron, the daughter of an 87-year-old woman Audrey Abreu, who tested positive last week according to the report. "It's akin to having a match thrown into a vat of gasoline." The facility was cited and fined $1,000 in August after it failed to report COVID-19 cases in August and potential outbreaks in June, July and August, the report said. The facility blamed its failure to report its COVID-19 cases as a "miscommunication related to timeframe required" it has since corrected, the report said. Read more at KTVU
