Press release from the Urbandale Community School District: March 1st, 2022 Women's History Month is a celebration of the contributions women have made to culture, society, and history within the United States and around the world. It's a month dedicated to highlighting the often overlooked contributions of women to United States history. Women such as Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Sandra Day O'Connor, Sacagawea, and Harriet Beecher Stowe all had a lasting impact on the history of the United States. Since 1987, it has been observed annually during the month of March in the United States. A school district in Sonoma, CA is credited with the birth of Women's History Week. In 1978, presentations were made by dozens of students honoring women's contribution to history through participation in the "Real Woman" essay contest. Several years later other districts began supporting the idea throughout the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women's History week. Congress later followed suit by proclaiming the week as a national celebration. Six years later, through the National Women's History Project, congress expanded the event to the entire month.
