Cal High Wins Mock Trial Championship, Advances To States

SAN RAMON, CA — California High School's Mock Trial team will represent Contra Costa County in a statewide competition next month after receiving first place in a county-level championship.Dougherty Valley High School came in second place, beating out 16 other county high schools. Additionally, four Cal High students received individual awards: Shiphrah Moses and Nicholas Harvey won 2nd Place and 3rd Place respectively as courtroom journalists, and Sathvika Sitaraman and Carol Chen won 2nd and 3rd Place respectively as Courtroom Artists. A full list of awardees can be found here. Cal High won on Feb. 15 following two prior championships. Teams work with a teacher and attorney to prepare defense and prosecution versions of a criminal trial. Students roleplay attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and bailiffs. In addition to Mock Trial successes, both Cal High robotics teams were selected by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation to represent the community at the Northern California Regional Championship. Team 1516A placed first and Team 1516B won an excellence award. Both teams will compete at the state level. "We are incredibly proud of our students at Cal High for this tremendous achievement," said SRVUSD Superintendent Dr. John Malloy. "One of the District's foundations of academic excellence is ensuring our schools create environments that empower students to own their learning. It is this type of accomplishment that exemplifies deep learning and innovation in SRVUSD."
