Accused Murderer Caught By State Police In Traffic Stop

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — Chicago Heights police have made an arrest in the February fatal shooting of Donta Scruggs, a 23-year-old Heights man who was shot and killed in a home on Normal Avenue. Michael Caraway, 18, of Chicago faces one count of first degree murder after Illinois State Police arrested him in a traffic stop on April 24 in Calumet City. Scruggs was found a home in the 400 block of Normal at 9:39 a.m. on Feb. 29 with "gunshot trauma," Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers said then. He was first taken to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in critical condition and then airlifted to John H. Stroger Hospital for more treatment before he died at Stroger later that day.
