MARIETTA, GA — A driver suspected of driving drunk hit a Marietta woman — killing her — and drove off without offering aid, Marietta police said. He was later arrested not far from the scene. Shakena Bates, 40, was walking on Franklin Gateway around 11:30 p.m. Friday night when she was hit by a Dodge Challenger, a Marietta Police Department spokesperson said. The car drove off without helping Bates or calling 911. Investigators later arrested the driver, 34-year-old Danilo Barrow, a few hours after the hit-and-run crash. They arrested him just a half-mile from the scene in the parking lot of a Days Inn by Wyndham hotel on Northwest Parkway. Shakena's sister, Teba, told 11Alive that Shakena was a mom to six kids, all ranging in age from 13 to 21 years old. Teba said she was walking to work at Kroger when she was killed. "We are devastated and heartbroken for all involved. There's no words to really express the shock and hurt. I love you Kena," Teba told the news outlet. Barrow faces several charges: felony hit-and-run, felony first degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, no proof of insurance and driving under the influence, according to Cobb jail records. He was booked into the Cobb County jail just before 5 a.m. Saturday, where he remains without bond. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Officer Nick St. Onge at 770-794-5352.
