Description

DEARBORN, MI — Democrat Jeffrey Pepper was leading Alabas Farhat in the state's special primary election for the 15th district. By Tuesday night, Pepper received 56.4 percent of the vote, while Farhat received 43.6 percent with 100 percent of precincts reporting. Pepper, an attorney, seems destined to face Republican Ginger Shearer, who ran unopposed in Tuesday's special primaries, in the general election on May 3 for the vacant seat. The seat became vacant after former representative Abdullah Hammoud was elected as Dearborn mayor November 2021. Pepper will be the favorite heading into the May general election, as the state's 15th district includes virtually all of Dearborn and leans heavily Democratic. Although the seat's term will end on Dec. 31, the winner will gain name recognition to run again in the area once the state's redistricting is complete.
