Prior to their concerts with the Folk Orchestra, world-famous Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and renowned cellist Natalie Haas will put on a workshop for local musicians.
The duo’s legendary workshops, which emphasize the linguistic and rhythmic drive of traditional music, are open to students and performers of all ages. Although most participants usually are intermediate to advanced string players (violin, cello, bass), other instrumentalists also are welcome and encouraged to participate.
The theme for this workshop will be “Celtic Backup for Bowed Strings.”
Natalie says: “We will take an easy Scottish or Irish tune and explore the myriad ways of accompanying it rhythmically, chordally, etc. in the Celtic style (all bowed strings welcome).”
With their inclusive focus on building community through music-making, Alasdair and Natalie create a safe, non-judgmental, non-competitive place to learn. All teaching is done by ear. By design, the workshops specific content will depend on the interests of the participants and how the morning progresses.
Topics they may explore include:
• Minding your own voice on your instrument • becoming “groove” aware
• ensemble playing
• creativity and improvisation
• arrangement
• forming medleys and larger pieces by combining medley tunes.
This special, one-time Folk Music Workshop is only $25.
(Students in need can also request scholarships.)
