GILROY, CA — A Gilroy man who was seriously injured in an explosion earlier this month was arrested Friday on suspicion of possessing destructive devices, The Gilroy Dispatch reports. Darren Dorrell's arrest was tied to an Oct. 12 explosion at a home on the 1700 block of Mantelli Drive according to the report. The 53-year-old suspect had been hospitalized with injuries to his right hand according the report. A homemade explosives lab and multiple improvised devices were found during a search of the home, the report said. The FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force were notified about the incident but it is not clear the extent to which those agencies are involved in the investigation, NBC News Los Angeles reports. "It's very concerning, that's why we're all waiting for the results of the search to find out what exactly he was doing in the house," police Sgt. John Ballard told the TV station. A witness who lives about 100 yards from the home described the blast as a "mild earthquake." "Well the house shook, it was just like a mild earthquake," Eileene Medina told NBC News. Dorrell was booked into Santa Clara County jail on six counts of possession of a destructive device, possession of materials with the intent to make a destructive device, and possession of a destructive device in or near any private habitation, The Dispatch reports. Dorrell is being held without bail. Read more in The Gilroy Dispatch
