Black Flag revolves around a young African-American man named “Marcus” who converts to Islam based on his relationship with close Muslim friends of south Asian background. Marcus develops close friendships with several Muslims in the south Asian community after his conversion; he hangs out frequently with these friends, prays with them, attends mosque with them over several years period. Although Marcus developed close friendships with these friends and shared so many experiences with them, he still mentally felt like an outcast sometimes due to him being the only African-American friend in the group.
When the 2008-2009 recession hit, Marcus’ life spirals downward as he has trouble finding any meaningful job that is commensurate with a Bachelor’s degree. This destroys Marcus’ psyche and emotional stability; because of this and the compounding adage of the suffrage of African Americans socioeconomically, Marcus feels the world is against him.
Marcus starts to weaponize his new-found religion to “get back at the world” and progressively becomes condescending and develops a superiority complex thinking he knows more about the Islamic faith than his friends that were born into the faith. Many of Marcus’ friends start distancing themselves from him as they declare him to be dangerous or even a mole working for the government. Marcus ends up leaving the country and his friends don't see him for a few years.
