Description

A service of repentance and healing in partnership between WSUMC and Journey Church in Columbia, SC. In a partnership with the leaders of Journey Church in Columbia, SC, Washington Street United Methodist Church (WSUMC) will be holding a Service of Repentance and Healing on March 27 at 5:00 pm at WSUMC in its historic sanctuary. This special service will include choirs from both churches, along with pastors from both churches. This is sure to be a very meaningful and spiritual experience for the Columbia area. WSUMC is located at 1401 Washington Street in downtown Columbia, SC. This service will also broadcast live on the WSUMC YouTube Channel. Recognizing that if we do not acknowledge the sins of racism in our past and present, individually and systemically, we cannot hope to understand and heal the wounds of racist comments and actions, the service will include elements of confession and repentance and the repudiation of the times when this church has been silent in the face of racial injustice. All are welcome here. The service will also be available on YouTube as seating is limited and social distancing is still encouraged. At this time, masks will still be required and social distancing is encouraged. Washington Street was established in 1803 and was the first Christian house of worship in Columbia. In January of 2016, WSUMC updated its identity statement to reflect the vision of the church and its congregation: “The congregation of WSUMC praises and serves God from the heart of the city in ways which reach our neighbors near and far. We welcome all who seek the love and mercy of Christ regardless of race, creed, age, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or economic status. We honor traditions as rooted in our history, our expression of worship, and our respect for theological curiosity. We nonetheless see vital change and ongoing renewal as essential for spiritual growth.” Journey Church was established in 2007. Journey is a Christian church connected with the South Carolina United Methodist Church. Journey mixes a modern style with some of the traditional practices of the Christian church. We are committed to making disciples. Their core values vow for members to offer their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Our prayer is “O, Lord, draw us to the people who need us this day and those we will need to build Your kingdom and help You do more. Amen.”
