NEW ROCHELLE, NY — As of Friday, Washington Avenue is now a one-way street in front of Columbus Elementary School.
City officials have begun piloting a traffic plan that involves changing the street to a one-way westbound between Fifth and Sixth Streets and making Fifth Street a one-way between Washington and Union Avenues.

The plan went into place Friday, and officials hope it will reduce traffic conflicts near the school and St. Joseph's Church, in addition to making the street safer for pedestrians and students.
It would also allow for a potential drop-off and pick-up lane at Columbus, officials said.
The city didn't provide details on when the pilot program will end, though they said it's temporary and designed to "make sure it is effective."
