North Shore-Filmed "CODA" Wins Big At Screen Actors Guild Awards

ROCKPORT, MA — A North Shore-based movie about the daughter of deaf parents hoping to pursue her dream of attending Berklee School of Music in Boston won big at Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards. The victory for the Apple+ movie "CODA" — which stands for Child of Deaf Adults — is considered groundbreaking for its largely deaf cast and is expected to give the film set and shot in Gloucester and Rockport a big boost of momentum heading into the final month of Oscar season. Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin won the award along with co-stars Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant and Emilia Jones. "Thank you (Screen Actors Guild Awards) for recognizing Deaf actors and this labor of love," Matlin posted on social media Sunday night. Hollywood newcomer Jones stars in the coming-of-age movie about a high school student who has to balance her desire to study music in Boston with her concerns about abandoning her family at a time when its fishing business is struggling. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. The Academy Awards are set for March 27.
