BROOKFIELD, CT — Poetry and portraits will be on tap at The Brookfield Library and Art Gallery this March. On Mar. 3, from 6-7 p.m., poet Jennifer Y. Montgomery will present an online program on the history of haiku and other forms of Japanese micro poetry. Montgomery will then lead participants through the basics of writing haiku. "It's much more than just counting lines and syllables; each haiku presents a season and a single moment in nature." the program flyer reads. "Think about your favorite season and come prepared to write your own haiku." Attendees may register online here. From Mar. 9 and through Apr. 29, The Brookfield Library Art Gallery will present The Portrait Challenge, an exhibition of portraits created by local artists. The program will showcase how artists of all ages capture the faces of people and animals. The Brookfield Library Art Gallery is located in the library's Community Room and is open during the library's regular operating hours. Visitors should check in at the circulation desk before entering the gallery. An online version of the exhibition will be available on The Brookfield Library's website, starting March 5. Area artists interested in being considered for future shows in The Brookfield Library Art Gallery are invited to submit samples of their work either in person at the library or by emailing The Brookfield Library Art Gallery Committee at [email protected]. The committee will review all submissions and will contact those selected to schedule exhibitions. Members of the public will be able to view exhibitions online and in-person in The Brookfield Library's Community Room.
