They are also in charge of setting goals for both short-term and long-term projects, developing a budget for each, and supervising all promotional activities. Requirements to become one To become a marketing manager, you will need two to four years of work experience in marketing. You must have an undergraduate degree as well and will be expected to attend a marketing school. How to get a job There is no set degree for marketing managers. You will need to have a four-year education and/or relevant work experience in the field. Your education should include courses in marketing, business, and communication skills. You might also consider going to college for a degree in communications, journalism or public relations. These degrees will help you prepare for a career as a marketing manager because they often include courses about how to communicate with the media and the public, explains Donja Medina. Tips for success in the field The skills needed to become a marketing manager are varied. When applying for a position, you will generally need to have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills. You will also need good negotiation and decision making skills in order to be able to make strategic decisions that are in the best interest of your company. Organizational skills: A successful marketing manager needs excellent organizational abilities to juggle many different tasks and responsibilities. They need to be able to prioritize tasks and keep track of what needs to be done first. Communication skills: Communication is an essential skill for marketing managers because they interact with employees, clients and external vendors on a regular basis. They will usually have several verbal conversations per day, as well as emails and occasional written correspondence. Analytical Skills: Marketing managers should have strong analytical skills because they are responsible for evaluating their company's performance against its goals, analyzing the competition and analyzing customer trends. Strategic Decision Making Skills: Marketing managers should be strategic thinkers who can anticipate problems before they arise and make decisions accordingly.
