MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin authorities have issued an alert amid the rise of a recurring scam in which callers claiming to represent the Marin County Sheriff's Officedemanding payment.
"Over the last week, we've received multiple calls about a reoccurring scam," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
"This is a telephone scam where the caller states they are calling from the Marin County Sheriff's Office, this phony Deputy identifies himself as one of our current members and said someone missed their court date or has a warrant.
The scammer proceeds to pressure residents to pay nonexistent fines to avoid being arrested and sent to jail, the Sheriff's Office said.
The scammer demands payment in the form of a wire transfer or gift card, the Sheriff's Office said.
"We DO NOT call you to inform you of your warrants and we do not accept money in lieu of being taken to jail so you can attend said court date," the Sheriff's Office said.
