SUNNYVALE, CA — A San Jose woman was arrested at her home Sunday night after authorities said she stole an SUV with a 2-year-old boy inside in Sunnyvale.
Luong Tammy Huynh, 29, faces charges including kidnapping, child endangerment and vehicle theft, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said Monday. She remains held at the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
Huynh stole the SUV while the boy's mother was unloading groceries just before 4 a.m. Sunday. Authorities issued an Amber Alert at the time.
Melissa Jardine, 29, told the East Bay Times she was taking in a second load of groceries at a motel and her son was asleep in the SUV when he was abducted.
"Before I even got out of my room, I heard a car squeal, and as I came out here, he was gone, the car was gone, everybody was gone," she said.
Around 6 p.m. Sunday, a Sunnyvale patrol officer found the boy inside the stolen 2008 Buick Enclave in a parking lot about 4 miles away. He was taken to hospital as a precaution and appeared to be unharmed and healthy, authorities said. He was to be reunited with his mother.
Officers found video of Huynh as the thief, authorities said, and arrested her at her Florence Avenue home around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
