CALABASAS, CA — Excessive speed may have been a factor in the head- on crash on Malibu Canyon Road in the Santa Monica Mountains near Calabasas that killed an 18-year-old Orange County woman and left five others injured, authorities said Monday.
The woman was identified as Skylar R. Scripter of Laguna Hills, according to the coroner's office.Scripter was the front seat passenger in a 2009 Hyundai Genesis driven by another Laguna Hills woman with three other young women from south Orange County.
The crash was reported at 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Malibu Canyon Road just south of Piuma Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer A. Yadgar.
The road is predominantly two lanes, serving as a mountain pass between Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and the Ventura (101) Freeway in Calabasas.
The Genesis was northbound on Malibu Canyon Road when a southbound gray BMW M5 "at a high rate of speed ... crossed the double-yellow lines, directly in front of the Hyundai's path of travel," Yadgar said. "The BMW and Hyundai were involved in a head-on collision."
Scripter was pronounced dead at the scene, Yadgar said.
The drivers of both vehicles and the other Hyundai passengers were all taken to hospitals with what Yadgar described as "major injuries."
There were no arrests and the investigation continued, the officer said.
