CENTRAL PARK, NY — The New York City Marathon is returning in 2022 with its full capacity of 50,000 runners, up from the 25,000 participants that ran the famous race last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. To put the 50,000 number in perspective, that's significantly more people than the total population of countries such as Liechtenstein, Monaco, and San Marino. It is the world's largest marathon. The race in 2022, which will celebrate the New York City Marathon's 51st anniversary, will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6. The storied 26.2-mile race was canceled for in-person runners in 2020 due to the pandemic. The only time the New York City Marathon has been completely canceled was in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy. "Every year, runners from all over the world come to New York City because there's no better race than the New York City Marathon," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in a news release from New York Road Runners. "This race is the strongest proof of New York's unrelenting spirit and determination, and we are proud to announce that, this year, we'll be back at full capacity." Here are the important dates for runners looking to take part. "Last year's marathon served as an uplifting and unifying moment for New York City's recovery as well as a symbol of renewed hope, inspiration, and perseverance," said Race Director Ted Metellus, in a news release. "This November, we are excited to have runners from all over the world fully return as we come together to deliver one of the best days in New York." The New York City Marathon was held at half capacity last year, with only 25,000 runners competing. The iconic race ends every year in Central Park.
