PHOENIX, AZ — Scammers looking to make quick money are posing as police officers, judicial officials or court staff and threatening people with fines or jail time if they don't pay, the Phoenix Police Department warned in a news release. Anyone who receives a phone call, text or email from someone claiming to be a local official should not give them any information, police said. "The Phoenix Municipal Court will never use a phone call, text, or email to request personal or financial information, or to make threats," the city said in the news release. The city advises its citizens to be wary of any phone call, text, or email that: Asks for credit, debit or gift card information, a wire transfer or bank account numbers.Demands payment through pay app sites like Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square, PayPal or any similar site. Asks you to provide personal information like your date of birth or social security number. "These calls, texts, and emails, threatening fines, arrest, and/or jail time are fraudulent and are not connected with either the Phoenix Municipal Court or the Phoenix Police Department in any way, whatsoever," the city said in the news release.
