FREMONT, CA — An Oakland man who was already on probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm was arrested on robbery charges Thursday after police say he strong-armed two women out of their purses in a grocery store parking lot before he was taken into custody a short time later, police said. Leon Robinson, 26, was arrested by Fremont Police after the incident at the Hub Shopping Center. Two women in their 60s reported that a man approached them in the parking lot and took their purses before he escaped in a waiting vehicle. Both women were unharmed, police said. Police said that undercover detectives from the department were already in the area of various shopping plazas in response to increased burglaries and robberies, police said. A detective located the suspect vehicle fleeing the area while traveling at a high rate of speed in gray sedan and began following the vehicle as it turned onto northbound 880. Additional detectives in unmarked cars began following the vehicle while patrol officers responded to assist. Police said Robinson exited at Fremont Blvd. and began driving near additional shopping plazas. Detectives attempted an enforcement stop to prevent additional crimes from occurring. The vehicle fled and a short pursuit began. Detectives lost sight of the suspect vehicle and terminated the chase police said. Other detectives then located the suspect vehicle traveling north on 880 into Oakland. Detectives followed the suspect to 98th Avenue, where the vehicle exited. Robinson's car began traveling suspiciously near a jewelry store and eventually dropped off a passenger while the driver waited near the front of the business. Detectives decided to detain Robinson in the jewelry store to prevent another robbery from occurring. The driver fled and was not located. Robinson was arrested for robbery and was found to be in possession of stolen property from one of the victims from the shopping center. Robinson was booked at the Fremont City Jail for robbery, possession of stolen property, and violating his probation and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, police said. Robinson has three prior arrests for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and one prior arrest for possession of an illegal assault weapon, police said. Anyone with additional information regarding this robbery, is asked to contact the Investigations Unit at 510-790-6900.
