Press release from the City of Shakopee: August 19, 2020 The Shakopee City Council met Tuesday, Aug. 18. Among the meeting highlights: Council approves Nov. 3 ballot question The City Council approved a ballot question for the Nov. 3 General Election asking voters to decide whether to abolish the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission. The question on the ballot will read: "Shall the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission be abolished?" If voters approve the ballot question, the public municipal utility would fall under the City of Shakopee jurisdiction. The council approved putting the question to voters due to several concerns with the commission's management and operations, including city/utility relations, financial concerns, violations of state statute and water quality. Council awards contract for Stormwater Treatment BMP Project The City Council awarded a contract in the amount of $243,568.86 to S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. for the Regional Stormwater Treatment BMP in the Scott County Government Center parking lot. The project includes the construction of an underground stormwater best management practice at Lot A on the government center to improve stormwater quality in downtown Shakopee. Council approves the addition of second Community Center entrance The City Council approved contracts in the amount of $49,950 with Greystone Construction and $12,250 with Midwest Fencing to add a lower-level entrance on the south side of the Community Center. The entrance will be for customers using the aquatics center, gymnasium and multi-purpose room. The city plans to use federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding for the project, as it will mitigate congestion at the current entrance and provide better flow for customers. Council approves SandVenture maintenance projects, feasibility study concept The City Council approved contracts for several critical maintenance projects at SandVenture Aquatic Park. Contracts were approved in the amount of: $20,905 with Horizon Commercial Pool Supply to transition the pool's chlorination system to a safer Accutab System; $168,750 with Global Specialty Contractors to replace the pool's filtration system; $3,500 with Fischer Brothers to repair the large water slide; and $15,000 to WW Goetsch Associates to rebuild the slide pump. The total cost for the projects is $208,200, which will be paid out of the Building Internal Service Fund. Work is anticipated to be completed this fall to avoid reopening delays in spring 2021. Council approves design services for sanitary and storm sewer telemetry project The City Council approved a professional services agreement in the amount of $54,300 with Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. to perform design services for the SCADA system improvement project. The project will upgrade the city's automated supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that monitors the city's sanitary and storm sewer systems. The proposed 2021 project includes the design and construction of a SCADA system for Lift Station L16, the Stagecoach Road low-pressure sanitary sewer system and four manhole locations located along the Minnesota River. Council tables planned unit development amendment, plats of Southbridge Crossings The City Council tabled a planned unit development amendment to Southbridge Crossings East PUD and a preliminary and final plat of Southbridge Crossings East Sixth Addition at 1620 Crossings Blvd. More information: Kyle Sobota, Senior Planner, 952-233-9349. Council updates tobacco ordinance The City Council amended Title XI, Chapter 110 and Title XIII, Chapter 130 of the city code related to Tobacco Sales and Use to match state law. In 2020, the state of Minnesota raised the legal purchasing age of tobacco to 21 to align with federal law. The city was required to update its code to reflect these changes.
