HAUPPAUGE, NY — A police sergeant was injured after a drunken driver struck a police vehicle and one other car in Hauppauge early Sunday, Suffolk police said.
Tracy Smith, 30, of Huntington Station, was driving a 2021 Volkswagen on the westbound Long Island Expressway, half a mile west of exit 55, when he drove off the road and hit a Highway Patrol Bureau car that had its lights activated and was parked on the shoulder behind another vehicle at 4:43 a.m., police said.
The Volkswagen then hit a 2008 Ford, which was in the main travel lanes, police said. No one inside the Ford was injured, police said.
The sergeant was treated and released from Stony Brook University Hospital. Smith was not injured.
Smith was charged with driving while intoxicated and issued a summons for violation of the Move Over Law. He was transported to the Third Precinct and is set to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
