The property was initially called the Hackberry Creek Ranch. By 1959, the ranch had grown to over 6,000 acres and was renamed El Ranchito de los Colinas. By 1982, the city had grown to about 350 businesses, including United Technologies Building Systems, Burroughs Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Sales, TeleVideo Systems, and Technicare Corporation. In the early part of the century, Las Colinas grew steadily and became an important area for corporations. Land sales soared to $124 million in 1984 and dropped to $96 million in 1985. In 1986, Las Colinas Corporation's parent company, the Southland Financial Corporation, was dealing with enormous debt and was in danger of foreclosure. In the late 1980s, the community had a difficult time with its construction and occupancy rates. As the community began to grow, it became more expensive.
