The Standard Histories of Houston Texas by B.H. Carroll, H.W. Crew and Co., and the Handbook of Texas, are among the sources of this information. The first newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, was founded in 1831 and started publication May 2, 1837. Later, the newspaper changed its name to the Houston Morning Star, and was published April 8, 1839. This early paper reflected local concerns, including cotton production, bayou clearance, railroads, and roads. The late 1800s marked the beginning of significant change in Houston and the United States. Telephones enabled people to communicate across the country. By 1880, the city had its first telephone exchange. In 1882, the city was home to the Houston Electric Light Co., which was one of the first electric companies in the country. In the same year, Houston built its first power plant and paved its streets. These developments signaled the beginning of the automobile era. Several prominent citizens of Houston attended the Presbyterian church. Some of these men included T. M. Bagby, Geo. W. Kidd, Sr., and Mr. Lillie. These men all contributed significantly to the city's history and the development of Houston. These individuals played an important role in Houston's development. In 1836, the Legislature granted incorporation to the city. In the following year, James S. Holman became the first mayor. Harris County, Texas, was formed, and in 1905, the town began using a modified commission form. The city first met on May 1, 1837. In 1838, settlers used lumber to build frame houses. The first railroad came to Houston in 1853. During the Civil War, the city served as a haven for Southerners who fled the Union naval blockade. In 1862, Confederate forces captured Galveston Island, which became the headquarters of the Confederacy's Trans-Mississippi Department. After the war, segregation became a problem. In 1917, racial tensions reached a boiling point in the city when black U.S. Army soldiers were stationed in Houston. Nearly twenty people were killed in the riot, resulting in a severe racial tension. In 1860, the city was a major trading center for cotton. In 1890, the railroad spurs from the inland converged in Houston. It served as the headquarters of General John Bankhead Magruder during the Civil War. In the 1890s, it was the railroad center of Texas. The city's history is complicated. However, it can be summed up with these five major milestones. In the nineteenth century, the city was incorporated, and the first mayor, James S. Holman, was elected. In the nineteenth century, the city had a population of around 45,000. By 1851, the city had 12 railways. The Confederate Army, and it became the state's leading port. Today, the city has more than 80 million people and is one of the largest cities in the world. The first railroad arrived in 1836. In the eighties, the railroad was completed, and the Houston Ship Channel was built in the year of 1860.
