Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: 02/26/2022 7:36 PM On 2/26/2022, at approximately 12:33 PM, a 65-year-old male was riding his newly purchased electric bicycle (E-bike) for the first time. He was traveling northbound on Highway 101 from Lomas Santa Fe in the City of Solana Beach. While riding in the designated bicycle lane, the rider attempted to overtake a slower bicyclist traveling in the same direction. As he did so, his E-bike began to wobble and he fell into the nearest lane of traffic that was occupied by a slow-moving Dodge truck. The truck then collided with the 65-year-old male. Paramedics and deputies quickly arrived on the scene. The male was transported via ambulance to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla where he succumbed to his injuries. The Sheriff's Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team was called out to the scene and is assisting traffic deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station with their investigation. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the collision.
